It might be cold as ice outside, but inside a barbershop in Toronto’s northwest Little Jamaica neighbourhood, things are heating up. The buzz of a razor in action is drowned out by the crowd that has packed the Hair Play Salon to riff about Black love, honesty and hope when it comes to dating and relationships. Most women want the bad boy, they want the guy who’s getting all the girls,” says barber Damien Samuels, much to the dismay of many of the women who have braved the cold to share their trials of dating while Black. As Black women, if Black men don’t respect or support us, no one else will,” says another attendee, speaking over the others fighting to say their piece. And that’s essentially the point of the discussion: to bring Black men and women together to communicate and connect, and to share openly about how they’re feeling about the dating scene. HuffPost Canada spoke to a few of the barbershop attendees to get their take on dating while Black, and what brought them to the discussion. I’m on this journey to understand my culture more. And Black love is really interesting. I’ve travelled around and noticed that, in Toronto, it’s especially hard when it comes to Black love and dating.

That realization launched a research trajectory. For her dissertation, she interviewed women who self-identified as White, Latina, Black, or Asian. For starters, place matters.
Dating technology is generally place-based. Take Tinder. On the dating app, an individual views the profiles of others within their preferred number of miles. For example, in a more conservative area where there was a greater expectation for women to stay home and raise children after marriage, women felt their desire for more egalitarian relationships was hindered.

Following a romance in my early twenties with an older man who, I eventually accepted, was simply at a different stage of life, I went through a series of short relationships of varying significance. I was searching for a committed relationship with a supportive partner, someone I could love deeply and who shared my values and goals. Like many singles, I had created an online dating profile.
But I rarely logged in. Now I decided to take it more seriously—these days, I seem to hear fewer and fewer stories of real life meet-cutes. Meanwhile, online, I could decide between sites with free memberships, such as Plenty of Fish; paid sites with an older, more earnest clientele, such as eHarmony; niche sites such as JDATE and Gluten-Free Singles; and many others, all slightly differentiated by price, demographics, and objectives.

Since the dawn of Western civilization, white supremacy has influenced nearly every aspect of our society. One area in which white supremacy remains to be pervasive is in our perceptions of beauty within the western world. Eurocentric standards of beauty have been a hallmark of American society since the inception of our nation. One of the key ways in which we get our standards of beauty, the acting industry, continues to be a white-dominated field.
With the overrepresentation of white people in Hollywood, much of what we think is beautiful becomes centered on the archetypal white women in film. These standards value European features, like lighter skin, straight hair, thin noses and lips and light colored eyes, which are heavily associated with whiteness. Preference for these features can even be observed at an early age regardless of race, as evidenced by the infamous doll study by Kenneth and Mamie Clark in Originally, segregation was thought to be responsible for black children preferring to play with white dolls or thinking they were better; however, the lack of change in the findings from the study from to now suggests that the way our society perceives beauty is to blame.
In online dating, this outlook is made abundantly clear to women of color, and particularly black women. A blog post by OKCupid in tracked the racial preferences of users of their app in a study they conducted. The results of the study confirmed that racial biases still play a massive role in online dating. The study showed that black women and Asian men were the least desired groups with black men not too far behind.

As I placed my empty potluck dish into my bag, my coworker mentioned that my boyfriend must be a lucky man. I reluctantly admitted that I was unattached. Immediately I was surrounded with other nurses giving me advice on dating, and relationships in general. I chuckle to remember the scene. Sumiko Wilson February 13, As I waited for my Tinder date to arrive, I got deeper and deeper into his social media. Before my ex and I began our two-year courtship, I bounced from situationship to situationship without any real attachment to anyone I was dating. But after falling in love with my ex, I experienced the intensity of my first serious relationship and endured the pain of my first breakup. Once we had parted ways, I longed for something casual again.
So shortly after we broke up, I downloaded Tinder. Naturally, being on a date with a complete stranger, like the one I was waiting for at that downtown restaurant, was an adjustment. By the time my Tinder date, a regular-shmegular Bay Street bro, sauntered in, my social media research confirmed that he had never dated a Black girl before. Whether or not his ex was dead was inconclusive, but I digressed. My suspicions aside, we chatted about our respective upbringings, interests, first jobs and last relationships over cocktails.
Having to explain why these were both problematic takes would have been tedious and telling of our different backgrounds. I would have gone from being his date to being his Black culture concierge. I was also way too drunk to properly rebut. I spent the entire Uber ride home swiping left and right on new guys.
